between wake and sleep
I. Tracing
the windowpane shadow
on popcorn ceilings.
II. Memorizing the blue outline.
The alarm clock's visage
on the bedside table.
III. Basking in the moon's glow.
Thinking of those who
see the same moon.
IV. Feeling the warm body
next to you in a sleeping bag
under a canopy of stars.
V. Hearing an ancient song
outside the curtains
from ocean waves.
VI. Hearing leaves rustle
on trees down in the holler and
distant howls through chilled air.
VII. Sharing your bed for years
and you sharing mine.
Not knowing you anymore.
VIII. Feeling your hand loosen
— your breath deepen —
as you fall asleep.
IX. Staring
into a bright light. Confessing
everything and nothing.
